New Dimassi’s Mediterranean buffet offers meals unique to San Antonio

I’ll be honest, I hadn’t heard of Dimassi’s Mediterranean buffet when I received an invitation for lunch. But after my first trip, I can’t wait to go back. The family-run Mediterranean buffet chain opened in Houston in 1992 and has since developed a footprint the size of Texas. San Antonio is now home to two Dimassi locations, at 111 SW Loop 410 and 12858 West Interstate 10 Frontage Road.

I visited the University of Texas in the San Antonio area, which opened in a former Zio’s, in mid-March. The space still has a lingering Zio aesthetic with many arches and columns decorating the space, but the buffet line is the focal point.

Here’s a quick taste.

Try everything

The lunch buffet included salads, main dishes, three types of hummus, protein ranging from mustard chicken to kafta skewers, and desserts.

I loaded my plate with a rice base, fatoush, mustard chicken, spicy hummus, hot vegetables like zucchini and potatoes (which were perfect for dipping) and started. I had been waiting for this moment for a week and it did not disappoint. The tender and tangy mustard chicken was outstanding, the rice was flavorful and perfectly spongy, and the garlic dip (which I picked up on my second round) had me itching to come back.

There wasn’t much that I didn’t like. I love a good buffet, but most of the time my plates end up with a few leftover bites of options that I didn’t have room for or that looked better in line than they tasted. This was not the case with Dimassi. Every one of my plates was cleared.

What does it look like?

My lunch time trip was quiet. There were about four other groups during the 11 a.m. to noon period. The space is clean and spacious, but you can definitely tell it was once a Zio.
