A restaurant in Wirral specializing in American cuisine blew me away with its wide selection of dishes and flavors.
The right hood in West Kirby opened in December 2021, bringing a taste of New York to the beach town.
I came across the restaurant on Instagram and immediately knew I had to go because of the funky decor and delicious food.

I finally visited on a Monday lunchtime, and although the venue was quite quiet (the restaurant is busier in the evening), we were warmly welcomed and invited to choose any table.
I chose a cozy booth against the main graffiti wall which comes with neon signage. There is also a “toolbox” on each table containing cutlery and condiments – The Good Hood is really unlike any restaurant I have been to before.
The waiter handed me a large brown paper bag that had the food menu printed on it, and inside the bag were the drinks and vegan menus.
The drink menu had all the usual options including soft drinks, cocktails, wine and beer. However, it was the prosecco and gin glazed granita section that caught my eye.
I decided to go for the “Sugar T*ts” slush – vanilla meringue gin and raspberry prosecco glazed slush and it was very refreshing and a nice combination of flavors.
When the waiter brought my drink to the table, he also handed me what looked like a 100 dollar bill. Looking a little puzzled, he explained that the special note can be used on my next visit to get 2 for 1 cocktails.
As for the food, as there were two of us, we decided to try a little bit of everything. We each went for a hot dog and also shared a veggie pizza, homemade fries, mac and cheese and coleslaw.
The “Chilled Hot Dog” was a chewy brioche baguette containing a jumbo smoked pork sausage that had been dunked in beer and cooked to order. It came with slow cooked onions, ketchup and mustard. The sausage was absolutely delicious and the beer complimented the delicious smoky flavor nicely.
The vegetarian pizza, which was served in a cardboard pizza box, came with red onions, tomatoes, jalapenos, pickles, slow coleslaw, smoked chipotle, mozzarella, and oregano. The thin crust was soft and flavorful, the vegetables were perfectly cooked, and the tomato sauce was rich.
The homemade fries were thin and crispy, more like crispy sticks than “normal” fries. They were unlike any fries I had had before and were delicious.
But it was the other two secondary controls that stood out the most.
The mac and cheese was hands down the best I’ve ever had, and the coleslaw was creamier and more indulgent. Next time I visit I think I’ll order one of each as my main meal!
The amazing food didn’t stop there and although we were both feeling full already, we couldn’t resist sharing the “Donut On A Stick”.
In a quirky twist, The Good Hood gives you a pair of retro 3D image binoculars to view the dessert menu and as soon as the image of the donut popped up I knew this was the one for us.
The donut, full of sticky strawberry jam, comes with strawberry chocolate sauce, mini smarties, jelly beans and chocolate chunks sprinkled on top. There is also a marshmallow on top which the waiter toasts in front of you.
The donut on a stick looked amazing, had the real “wow factor” and was one of the most fun and delicious desserts I have had in a restaurant.
The restaurant is currently creating an outdoor space ready for the warmer months, and on Sundays adults can enjoy the ‘Bottomless Lunch’ for £17.50 each (minimum four people).
