Fogo de Chão, the Brazilian churrascaria where roving waiters roam from table to table serving sizzling grilled meat from a skewer, is opening a huge new restaurant in Coral Gables.

A few blocks south of Miracle Mile, the brand’s new flagship will be at The Plaza Coral Gables, a mixed-use development with hotels, residential units, restaurants and shops. The restaurant will have a 280-seat dining room, with an outdoor churrasco bar where diners can eat and watch the chefs butcher, prepare and grill different cuts of meat gaucho style over open flames.

There is also a large patio for outdoor dining.

The restaurant brand, which was founded in southern Brazil in 1979 and has more than 60 locations worldwide, is a perfect fit for The Plaza, said general manager Neimar Hensel, a native of Brazil and Fogo de Chão in Orlando. .

“At Fogo, we continually strive to provide a dining experience of discovery and joy for our customers,” he said. “The premier dining and shopping scene at Plaza Coral Gables is the perfect setting to show our Fogo fans and new guests what awaits Fogo as we introduce new designs and experiences.”

At the Next Level Lounge which is part of Fogo de Chão, patrons can sit at the bar, table or booth and enjoy premium whiskey and bourbon along with South American wines.

The Coral Gables restaurant is the brand’s second location in South Florida: there’s a Fogo in South Miami Beach’s Fifth Ward, and one planned in Fort Lauderdale.

But the new Gables Restaurant presents a new vision of Fogo’s future, with two unique new additions to this location: the exclusive, upscale Next Level Lounge on the mezzanine level, specializing in premium whiskey, bourbons and South American wines, and The Butchery, a take-out market selling imported charcuterie, with butchers on hand to answer any questions a home grill chef might have.

Going forward, the plan is to integrate the two elements in future restaurants, according to a spokesperson.

At the main restaurant, continuous table service of signature cuts of meat is $56.95 per person for dinner, with the option to upgrade to what the restaurant calls “indulgent” cuts. The base price includes the open market table and the Feijoada bar, which includes side dishes such as salads, vegetables, imported cheeses, smoked salmon, cold cuts, soup, Fogo feijoada (traditional bean stew blacks with sausage) served with rice and more.
