Known for delivering “the food Cajuns love to eat when they go out,” Boutin’s Cajun Seafood Steakhouse and Oyster Bar in Carencro is steeped in Louisiana traditions. Named after owner Lynn Boutin, this restaurant wants to instill a love of Cajun cuisine in everyone.
Boutin grew up on the north side of Lafayette and moved to Henderson with his family in the 1970s. He was always surrounded by Cajun culture in Acadiana and found beauty there. Growing up in a large family, he didn’t go out to eat often but remembers loving the experience of visiting restaurants.
Boutin entered the restaurant business as a teenager when he started running a restaurant and nightclub in Breaux Bridge.
“When I was 19, I ran a business called Mulate’s,” he explains. “But we had turned that barn into a nightclub. Running a nightclub is what got me into restaurants. Mulate became a very popular place for locals and tourists. And that was one of the first places to really do live Cajun music with dancing and food.. We went from a very small restaurant with about 100 seats We went to 200 seats then 250. And then we opened a second restaurant in 88 in Baton Rouge, then one in New Orleans in 1990.”
Working with Mulate’s ignited a fire in him and he has been managing and owning restaurants across Louisiana for nearly 40 years. He was previously co-owner and manager of Café Tee George in Lafayette in the late 1990s. In 2001, Boutin’s restaurant in Baton Rouge opened.
Boutin has operated this place for almost 14 years and it has become a local favorite. In early 2015, the restaurant closed its doors for good and Boutin returned home. Four years after the Baton Rouge site closed, he decided to open a new restaurant in Carencro. Boutin’s Cajun Seafood Steakhouse and Oyster Bar officially opened in July 2019.
The restaurant had its first success and Boutin was happy to do what he loved again. Within seven months of opening, COVID lockdowns started to happen and Boutin ended up in the hospital.
“So we opened in July 2019,” says Boutin. “The pandemic began [around] March, I had COVID in July. I had it for about 48 days. Despite the pandemic, we were quite busy, which was nice to hear.”
Boutin’s has seen its food sales increase by 50% over the next year and hopes to see a similar increase this year. Popular dishes at Boutin’s Cajun Seafood Steakhouse include Bayou Boutin, crawfish enchiladas, eggplant crabmeat, crawfish wontons, and raw oysters. The menu includes a variety of pastas, salads, plates, po’ boys, steaks and entrees.
Stemming from some of Louisiana’s most iconic restaurants, Boutin’s Cajun Seafood Steakhouse and Oyster Bar hopes to make a lasting impression on Acadiana residents, and the owner isn’t planning on stopping anytime soon. Boutin’s is located at 114 Derek Plaza Suite D in Carencro. For menus and hours of operation, visit their website, boutinscajun.com.
